From Mountains to Mars
4 days of landscape whiplash • 20+ hours of riding • 829km through Colombia's most dramatic terrain shift • 70% paved • 30% desert single-track
Ever wondered what it would feel like to ride from a lush mountain waterfall straight into a Martian landscape? Welcome to the Tatacoa Desert tour, where Mother Nature shows off her multiple personality disorder and you get front-row seats to the spectacle.
Why This Tour Will Break Your Brain (In the Best Way)
This isn't just a motorcycle tour – it's a masterclass in Colombia's incredible diversity. We're talking about a journey that takes you from high-altitude mountain passes and hidden cave swimming holes to red desert off-roading and world-class stargazing. Four days where you'll question if you're still on the same planet, let alone in the same country.
Day 1: The "Wait, We're Going Where?" Beginning
Bogotá → Girardot • 4 hours 45 minutes • 141km of mixed terrain
We'll escape Bogotá's chaos and head southwest to Tequendama Falls – a dramatic 132-meter waterfall with jaw-dropping views and a history dark enough to make you appreciate being on the viewing side rather than the jumping side.
Then comes the good stuff: winding mountain roads that mix smooth pavement with just enough dirt to keep things interesting. Midday highlight? A dip at one of our favorite hidden swimming holes – a magical cave with its own waterfall that tourists haven't discovered yet (and hopefully never will).
From there, we descend into Colombia's warmer central valley and the riverside town of Girardot, where you'll spend the night wondering how you went from mountain mist to tropical warmth in a single day.
Sleep: Girardot hotel with shared rooms (individual beds because adventure bonds people, but everyone needs their space)
Day 2: The "Forgotten Coffee Country" Revelation
Girardot → Tatacoa Desert • 5 hours 30 minutes • 211km through time-forgotten villages
After breakfast, we gear up for the ride that'll make you understand why Colombia is the adventure riding world's best-kept secret. We're talking about winding routes through coffee towns that time and tourists forgot – authentic, peaceful, and so beautiful you'll start planning your retirement before lunch.
As we descend into Huila, watch the scenery shift like someone's changing the channel from "Lush Green Paradise" to "Desert Planet Documentary." By afternoon, we'll reach Villavieja, gateway to the Tatacoa Desert, where we'll wrap the day with cold beers and burgers at a local brewpub because even desert adventurers need proper fuel.
Sleep: Desert hostel in Villavieja (shared dorms, individual beds, and the kind of silence city people forgot existed)
Day 3: The "Holy Crap, This is Still Earth?" Experience
Tatacoa Desert Loop • 3-4 hours of pure off-road desert magic
Today's the day you understand why we call this tour "Mars." We'll kick off with an off-road loop through Tatacoa's rugged trails – sandy tracks, wide-open views, and the kind of isolation that makes you realize how small you are in the best possible way.
First stop: The Grey Desert, where smooth rock formations and pale earth create a moonlike landscape so surreal you'll check your GPS to make sure you're still in Colombia. Then we cool off with a desert swimming pool dip because nothing beats the contrast of refreshing water in an alien landscape.
Late afternoon brings the Red Desert hike through dried riverbeds and sculpted clay formations. This is where the desert glows at sunset – think Instagram-worthy but actually experiencing it instead of just photographing it.
Tonight's finale: Guided stargazing at the local observatory. Here's the kicker – Tatacoa is Colombia's only Starlight-certified location, making it the country's premier astronomy destination. With virtually zero light pollution, the night sky here doesn't just twinkle – it absolutely comes alive.
Sleep: Desert lodging where the only sounds are wind and your own thoughts
Day 4: The "Different Planet to Capital City" Reality Check
Tatacoa Desert → Bogotá • 6 hours • 276km of pure pavement curves
We'll start with a moto ferry ride across the Magdalena River (Colombia's most iconic waterway), then cruise north through the open roads of Tolima and Cundinamarca. It's all winding pavement, high-altitude views, and enough curves to remind you why you fell in love with riding in the first place.
As we climb back into the mountains, you'll have time to process four days of landscape whiplash before arriving back in Bogotá for reflection at the Loco Moto office.

Fair Warning About Accommodations
We keep tours affordable by using shared rooms and dorms. Think of it as built-in friend-making. Private room upgrades are available if you need your space—just ask!
Fair Warning About Colombian Reality
All riding times and distances are approximate because, well, this is Colombia. Sometimes we cruise faster than expected, sometimes we stop every five minutes for photos because the views are too incredible to pass up. And yes, occasionally Mother Nature decides to redecorate the roads with a landslide, which means we get bonus adventure via creative detours. It's all part of the authentic Colombian motorcycle experience – and honestly, some of our best stories come from the days that didn't go exactly as planned.
